Jeremy and Tim Vine - the unlikeliest double-act around 20 August Did you argue a lot as children? Tim Vine: Not my scene. JV: Exactly. Tim was much more unconventional. He used to exist in his own little world. Jeremy, did you feel protective of Tim? TV: Well, you could have had a couple of mine. How would your parents have wanted you to turn out? TV: They never pressured me to do anything. TV: Eh? What do you mean?
Still bitter about anything that happened between you during childhood? TV: muttering : All of it. TV: Yeah, there was a bit of that. TV: On the other hand, music brought us closer. Who got the most girls when you were in the band? TV: But have you seen the girls in Cheam? How about now — does the non-stop punning cause problems, Tim? Who was most rebellious? Where does this desire to perform come from? Tim, did you try out jokes on the rest of the family?
JV: But you never minded making a fool of yourself, did you? JV: I was mortified. JV: I am, definitely. Too much internal dredging. Do your careers overlap? Tim, is your character in Not Going Out anything like the real you? Are you closer than you used to be? Do you revert to how you were as children when together as a family? Does Jeremy still pull rank? JV shocked : I suppose I do. He works hard at his gags, fine-tuning them for weeks. Occasionally, they come to him naturally.
Other times, he challenges himself to write up to 15 a day. Then he tries them out in front of audiences in pubs and comedy clubs. The act he is compared to is Tommy Cooper: big men with sharp wits, one-liners and a love of silly props.
Tim has never been married — the closest he came was an engagement that lasted three days — and is single. Talking about his home life is the only time he gets a little flustered. They really believe that, if they shout loud enough, it will change the course of the story.
