The Color Purple. Fifty Shades of Grey. These specialty libraries often exist within the institutions they serve, and are usually relatively small, forcing their librarians to assume multiple roles. Museum art libraries, for example, support the work of curators and art historians.
Blackman also occasionally purchases books or ephemera that will appear in exhibits, and witnessing the fruits of those efforts has become a key part of what excites her about museum librarianship. Work in a specialty library typically requires a second graduate degree, or at least a keen and demonstrated interest in the subject matter. Even the best library collection is of little use if patrons and staff cannot find what they need.
Cataloging and metadata librarians are experts in organization, collaborating with others in their institution to make access to materials intuitive and accurate. She also drafts the metadata used for the catalogs, prepares MARC records, and meets with colleagues to develop solutions to ongoing issues in the library. Kathryn Lybarger, head of cataloging and metadata at the University of Kentucky, earned her library science degree from the University of Kentucky in UX librarians examine and improve processes, from websites to wayfinding.
While aspects of UX work occur behind the scenes, a desire to work closely with library patrons remains a must. This research often brings to light challenges that the original system designers might not have anticipated. She also serves on the UA Libraries space planning committee and has played a role in library renovations. As one example, she recently worked with research and teaching librarians to improve the way in which users contact librarians on the web.
Departments across UA regularly consult with her on topics like UX design and user testing. Librarians can play a key role in helping young users develop an interest in reading and learning. Kristen Todd-Wurm is a graduate of Long Island University—Post and national coordinator for Family Place Libraries, which supports early childhood programming for babies, toddlers, and their families.
As Todd-Wurm tells LJ , her work ranges from devising educational sessions for children and caregivers to designing play spaces to developing a collection of board books and toys. In addition, Ethical Culture Fieldston students attend a weekly class in the library, which may require Panek to teach a lesson or perform a read-aloud. During library classes, her students are given time to select and check out books, and she guides them one-on-one to find books that they might like—a form of youth RA work.
Libraries have long been vital community spaces, offering value to patrons beyond traditional collections. Outreach librarians focus on connecting with patrons and helping them to take advantage of what the library has to offer. Those offerings may include support for English learners, homework help, and preparation for citizenship, as well as cultural showcases and documentary screenings. As this overview illustrates, the contributions of librarians are bounded only by their own ingenuity.

Librarians help people with homework and research questions, decide what items to purchase and to discard, offer programs and training, help people use the internet, build websites, and more.
Specialized librarians may run computer systems, work with seniors and non-English speaking populations, become specialists in a specific subject area, or maintain the records for the online catalog.
Librarian jobs are often full-time, although most libraries also rely on a core of part-time and "substitute" librarians to help cover all of the hours many libraries are open. Branch managers, in particular, can have additional director-like responsibilities, such as overseeing the condition of the facility or involvement in local neighborhood groups and projects. Library Directors have the main leadership role in the library.
Typical duties include preparing and overseeing the budget, developing employment and service policies, strategic planning, public and governmental relations, reporting to the governing board or official, ensuring compliance with laws, fundraising, hiring, motivating and firing staff, and more. Directors' duties and compensation can vary greatly depending on the size of the library.
Other P rofessionals can play major roles in libraries. These may include jobs such as public relations, accounting and human resources, network administration, facilities management, transportation services and security. Rates of pay vary widely depending on the size of library, geographic area and skills and educational requirements.
